Mandrakes HSE Quarterly Report for the 3rd Quarter 2010

This quarter saw the construction team reduce its first aid injury rate in comparison to the previous quarter with a total of 4 first aids compared to last quarter’s total of 8.

Whilst the number of injuries remained low for the quarter unfortunately the construction team incurred its first recordable injury for the year when an SMP contractor suffered a laceration to his left little finger. This injury when compared to previous minor first aids leading up to the recordable injury highlighted a trend amongst the workforce. This trend was the acceptance of the crew to work alongside known, already identified, fixable hazards. It is unknown whether this habit of proceeding with work was related to perceived pressure to complete the task, lack of equipment to fix the hazard or the extended time it would take to organise appropriate permits, equipment etc to control a hazard when the task was of short duration.

Either way it highlighted the need to re-emphasise the importance of taking the time to identify possible hazards but to also re-assess the task if the conditions change and take the appropriate time to rectify the situation before proceeding with the work. This message was delivered by the Construction management team supervisors at toolboxes, pre-starts and in the field. This, in conjunction with the site safety stand-down has seen the Construction Contractors finish of the quarter with no more recordable injuries or first aids.

A number of positive initiatives

Despite the Construction Team incurring their first recordable, the 3rd quarter has seen a number of positive initiatives introduced to help improve safety on site and the client/contractor relationship. Some of these initiatives were to establish an upper management weekly meeting between BP Construction manager and Mandrakes Construction manager and HSSE team.

The purpose of this meeting was to raise supervisor concerns, close current HSSE compliance gaps, and develop projects that can help improve safety around site. A monthly Contractor HSSE Committee to align Tier 3 contractors with procedures and policies (separate to the inaugural contractor committee) and a training and competency procedure that ensures that the workforce being employed on site are competent at the task they are being engaged to carry out.

Year to date has been successful so far for the Construction Contractors however previous years has seen in the fourth quarter an increasing rise in recordable injuries as the duration of the year starts to take its toll and the upcoming holidays distract the workforce’s focus. To continue the construction team’s good record, special attention will have to be paid to contractors’ frame of mind, keeping their focus on the task at hand as well as identifying hazards in pre-planning stage of work so as to remove as many hazards to the workforce in the field as reasonably possible.
